Marwa ( @travellingsudania) is a 24 year old Sudanese woman, and photographer. What does photography mean to you? “Photography is something I always had an eye for, but only recently did I develop a real passion for it. It is an art, and one that requires such attention to detail. It allows me to tell stories through an image.” And what does being Sudanese, and African mean to you? “Being a born & raised Londoner and not spending more than a few weeks in Sudan over the years, means I'm not as in touch with my Sudanese side as I would like to be. But I love Sudan; always have, always will - hence why I became Travellingsudania! Sudan isn't a place that I've ever lived in, but it still feels like home to me." What are you trying to achieve through your photographs? “Through travel photography, I want to inspire people to see the world, to teach people about different parts of the world. With my portraits, I want to tell stories. I've created photo documentary style images & interviewed my models so that people can get to know them. Other times, the story is in the tones, the pose, the outfit, the location, the eyes... - usually a combination." How does photography connect to your home country? “Story telling is my main theme as Travellingsudania and there are so many stories yet untold in this beautiful country. Sudan has also more recently become a hub for creative artists, especially visual ones. I have met and collaborated with some of the most creative people I've ever worked with, it's truly inspiring.” Are there any cultural customs that you personally like? “Sudanese attire and traditions with regards to weddings, specifically in brides. From the henna art on her hands and feet to the jadla and red toub at the jertik, there is so much beauty in the customs of a specific culture & how one ceremony can be done so differently, for example between the UK and Sudan. As much as it's something I enjoy showcasing through photography, it's also something I can't wait to experience myself.” What are your photography related plans for the future? “I definitely want to grow as an artist. As long as I'm taking beautiful pictures, meeting beautiful people and visiting beautiful places, I will be more than happy with whatever comes my way in my photography journey.”
