INTERVIEWING NABILA YAHAYA ON HER JOURNEY WITH FASHION DESIGN

Nabila Yahaya is an upcoming Nigerian fashion designer in Dubai, below is our interview with her where she describes her journey,, what her perspective on fashion is and what advice she has to offer in regards to upcoming creatives.

1) What made you start a career in fashion design?

Truthfully, I've always been interested in fashion. I started watching fashion tv and style network with my mom from when i was 4 years old and it led me to drawing little sketches of clothes and it just stuck since then. I couldn't picture myself doing anything else.

2) What does fashion represent for you? For me, fashion is freedom. Fashion is expression. Fashion is the ability to be anyone in the world from any time. The way you dress tells people your identity and gives them an idea of your personality and your values. 3) What do you especially enjoy about the design process? I think I enjoy sketching the most. Researching new styles and techniques and then making them my own, coming up with new ways to use them. 4) What has your design journey been looking like? Well, it's just starting to be honest. I just graduated with a degree in Fashion design and pattern making from Esmod Dubai. I'm doing an internship now in a fashion house in Nigeria. I'm hoping to eventually start working for a bigger brand and gain more experience and knowledge before starting my own brand. 5) What is your advice for young creatives? My advice to young creatives is to not give up. It's hard following an uncommon path. No one warns you about all the challenges you'll face but don't stop trying. You only fail when you stop trying. 2. You won't be good at everything when you start but don't let that discourage you, don't be afraid to ask for help or ask questions. 3. Take a breather sometimes, burnout is real. You cant grind it 100% of the time. 4. There's no such thing as perfect but practice makes improvement. Keep practicing!
