ON ARTIST ISSHAQ ISMAIL

What inspires your art? "I am imbued by geometric and biomorphic forms. Furthermore I am also interested in the conversations on place and identity." How does culture influence your work? "I believe culture is always in a state of Flux and popular culture is the order of the day. However the Sociocultural and political realities embedded within this 21st century influence my work through emotions and moods of the society. So I create personified characters that become metaphors of peoples sentiments. Furthermore the characters also become protagonists to advocate for the voiceless." Do you have a certain colour scheme that you prefer? If yes what do the colors symbolize? "I don’t have any hierarchy when it comes to my colour scheme. Furthermore I choose arbitrarily to work with muted and vibrant colours. As a result I create different identities ( black face, Brown Face, Green Face, Blue Face, Red Face, Gray Face, Purple Face and Orca Face) inhabiting different spaces." What made you choose this art style? "I am interested in the idea of my works not being stale but rather they should mutate. I describe my style as “Infantile Semi - Abstract” life is not perfect so I don’t see why I should draw perfect forms, furthermore I am also interested in challenging the perception of Aesthetics."
