Who was Sekhmet in Ancient Egyptian Deities?
Daughter of the sun god Ra, Sekhmet was a goddess that had the ability to wreak havoc or cure the ill. Her name literally translates to “she who is powerful” illustrating the strength the deity held.
Sekhmet was showcased as a woman whose head was of a lion that wore a sun disc. She was associated with both ailment and healing, with her worshippers believing that she had the ability to cure any disease.
Despite this, Sekhmet was feared as she was believed to be a fierce deity that was often referred to as “blood-thirsty.”
In regards to her origins, they remain unknown however she is thought to have appeared in the predynastic Egyptian period.
